How to Measure a Link Order Without Overclaiming

A simple way to separate what was delivered from what changed, so agencies can report on link orders honestly and avoid promising more than the data shows.

After a link order, a client asks one question: did it work? The honest answer is usually more complicated than a yes or a no. Rankings move for many reasons at once, and an agency that credits every improvement to the latest order will eventually be caught out by the first month where nothing moves. This post describes a measurement habit that stays honest.

Separate delivery from outcomes

Two different questions hide inside did it work. The first is about delivery: were the links placed as ordered. You can answer that with certainty by opening each live URL and checking the link, the anchor and the target page. The second is about outcomes: did visibility, calls or leads change. You can only answer that with evidence and caution. Report the two in separate sections so the certain part is never blurred by the uncertain part.

Take a baseline before the order

Record the starting position on the day you order. Useful items include:

  • Impressions and clicks for the target page in Search Console.
  • Positions for a short, chosen list of search phrases in your rank tracker.
  • Map visibility for the main service in the client's area.
  • Calls, direction requests and form submissions from the client's business profile and website.

Write the date beside each figure. Without a dated baseline, any later claim is a memory contest.

Choose a fair window

Links need to be found, processed and weighed, and that takes an unpredictable amount of time. Judging a placement after a couple of days is almost always too early, and there is no single correct waiting period. Pick a window in advance, tell the client what it is, and look at the numbers only at its end and at fixed points along the way. Seasonal businesses should compare with the same period a year earlier where possible, not with last month.

Log everything else that changed

If you rewrote the page, fixed the site speed, updated the business profile and ordered links in the same month, you cannot say which action helped. Keep a change log with dates. When something improves, read the log before you claim the reason. When you cannot separate the causes, say that.

Use comparison pages

If a client has two similar pages and only one received links, compare their movement over the same window. This is not a clean experiment, since pages differ in age and competition, but it is more informative than looking at one page alone. Note the limits whenever you present such a comparison.

Write the report in careful language

Prefer wording like this: links were placed on these dates, and during the same period impressions for the page changed as shown, alongside the other changes listed. Avoid wording that says the links caused the change. Clients usually respond well to plain language, and it protects your agency when a month goes badly.

What to do when nothing moves

Start with delivery. Confirm the links are live, indexed and pointing where they should. Then check the basics of the target page, such as relevance, content depth, internal links and local details. Then consider competition, which may be stronger than the plan assumed. Sometimes the right decision is to stop buying links for that page and invest elsewhere. A placement record such as the one described under unbranded reporting makes these checks quicker.

The limits of any measurement

Links are one signal among many, and results depend on the client's site, the competition and the category. Buying or exchanging links for ranking purposes can go against Google's spam policies on link schemes. Good measurement does not remove that risk. It helps you decide with open eyes and describe the work accurately.

Search guidelines and tactics change, and no result can be promised. Review your approach regularly and adjust it to current guidance.
